| Summary |
This course will investigate how knowledge is embodied within artistic processes and artifacts. You will study the process of artistic research from artists producing knowledge avant la letter through to more scholarly approaches. The course intends to act as a bridge between art and more standard scholarly humanities research.

| Course description |
This course is taught via a combination of lecture and seminar discussions with a greater emphasis placed on the discursive aspects of group discussion. The course will take place in differing learning environments dependant and pertinent to the teaching schedule. This course may take place in standard lecture and seminar rooms but increasingly will seek alternate platforms for discussion of artistic research such as the studio, the walk, the gallery for example.
Week 1 - Introduction to Artistic Research.
Week 2 - Linking theory and practice - Introduction to peer presentation and artistic research statement.
Week 3 - Hidden knowledge - artistic research avant la lettre
Week 4 - Methods and Methodology - Inter-subjectivity
Week 5 - Creative experimentation: Artists as thinkers and makers/ Phenomenology and Haptic Research
Week 6 - Materials, methods and conceptual frameworks . An aspect of this session will be to introduce you to ways of giving your presentation the following week.
Week 7 - Peer presentation - Formative feedback/feedforward.
Week 8 - Ethics and Intuition. Formative feedback on Artistic research statement.
Week 9 - Critical thinking and action research.
Week 10 - What is the role of the artefact/ Where art meets the audience.
Week 11 - Peer summative presentations.
Week 12 - Summative submission of Artistic Research statement.

| Additional Information (Assessment) |
1. You will give a 15 minute presentation of your artistic research to peers which will be summatively assessed at the end of the course. You will have one opportunity to give this presentation at the mid way point of the course. This presentation should dileniate your artistic research processes and should show examples of inherent processes. The presentation should be visual, where appropriate, and should make reference to key methods and key texts. The delivery of the presentation should be discursive and need not be read. This component refere to learning outcomes 1 + 2 and accounts for 50% of the final grade.
2. You will write a 1000 artistic research statement which reflects upon your presentation and articulates an analysis of your unfolding processes with reference to the strands of external input received during the course. This component refers to learning outcomes 3 + 4 and accounts for 50% of the final grade.

| Feedback |
(a) Both aspects of the assessment will be formativly assessed in week 6 of the course. For the presentation to peers you will receive a letter grade and verbal feedback (from both peers seminar leader) and which will provide feed forward to allow you to improve the summamtive assessment. For the written artistic research statement you will receive a letter grade and a short written statement which relates directly to the learning outcomes 3 and 4.
(b) Summative assessment will take place in week 11 of the course and will consist of a 15 minute presentation to peers. The final 1000 artistic research statement will be submitted in week 12 to allow for the necessary time to reflect on the presentation.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Prepare and make constructive contributions to tutorials, seminars, crits, and presentations on the area of artistic research.
- Demonstrate critical understanding in identifying and communicating key methods and practices of artistic research
- Critically revaluate your artistic work through the field of artistic research
- Communicate your processes in a clear manner which demonstrates and understanding of the key issues in artistic research
