|Summary||This course is for post-beginners with some knowledge of Japanese language or students who successfully completed Foundation Japanese Language 1. It is not suitable for absolute beginners or students with knowledge of Japanese at Higher/GCSE or above.
All students take all elements of assessment including the examination. Auditing (Class Only) is not allowed.
This course runs in semester 2.
The following list is a description of the contents of the course. Along with each topic and function, relevant vocabulary, grammatical and textual structures, and culture notes will be introduced.
-Stating how frequently you do something and give a brief reason for why you do it
-Ordering at a restaurant
-Characteristics of things and people
-Basic greetings when visiting people and receiving guests
-Giving and receiving gifts and expressing gratitude
-Expressing your thoughts on things, about experiences
-Making/answering a telephone call
-Inviting someone, accepting or rejecting someone's offer
-Giving a reason for offering someone something
-Schedules in detail such as weekend plans and travel plans
-Asking someone to do something for you

||Degree Exam 50% (A two-hour written paper)
Coursework 50% (A class test, a listening comprehension test, and class participation)
||Feedback will be provided by correcting, encouraging, explaining why or how, suggesting alternatives, clarifying, discussing, or advising on where and how to improve.
Opportunities for feedback arise not only on homework and tests but also on class activities such as individual practice and pair work. It will be communicated in written or verbal or both, depending on the nature of the assignments, assessments, and activities.
Feedback on formative assessed work will be provided within 15 working days.
Students will also have a chance to discuss their feedback with their instructor during class time and via emails if they wish.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Speaking and listening: Communicate using a number of memorised words and phrases relating to a limited range of topics such as ordering food and drinks, inviting people to an event, and talking about travel plans.
- Reading and writing: Read and write text in Japanese if it is written without kanji (Chinese character) or with a limited number of kanji such as numbers. Students will have basic command of 20 kanji and will be able to read and write a simple letter or postcard on a limited range of topics such as everyday activities and travels.
- Understanding cultural diversity: Recognise aspects of Japanese culture, such as landmarks, Japanese houses, performing arts, manners, and festivals.
- Computer and IT skills: Use emails, Blackboard Learn virtual learning environment and other tools in order to communicate with classmates and teaching staffs. Students will become familiar with the use of online language learning resources to enhance their self-study and to help him or her continue with Japanese language learning.
- Personal development: Develop confidence in language learning, understanding and responding to others in appropriate situations. Students will learn to work individually as well as in pairs or small groups.

||This course is open to all students as a credit bearing course, or over and above their full credit load, as a non credit bearing course.
LLC students may only take this course if it is over and above their full credit load, as a non credit bearing course. Visiting Students may only take this course for credits.
Please note that auditing this course is not allowed. You must be enrolled as CE (Class and Assessment including centrally arranged exam).
