SummaryThis post-introductory course is intended for students who have successfully completed Foundation Korean Language 1 or have reached an equivalent standard (Standard Grade/GCSE). It is not suitable for absolute beginners or students with knowledge of Korean at Highers/A-level or above. This course runs in semester 2.

All students take all elements of assessment, including the examination. Auditing (Class Only) is not allowed.
Course description The lectures will be taught in larger groups (of approximately 30 students), while separate oral tutorials will entail smaller groups (of around 15 students). In the tutorials, students will be able to practice speaking and writing tutorials. Classes will be conducted in an interactive manner, combining PowerPoint presentations by the instructor and role play among students. Students will acquire an additional vocabulary of 600/700 Korean words. You will also learn how to comprehend and compose short essays in Korean. Topics covered throughout the course will include weather, leisure activities, ordering food and family.

Additional Information (Assessment) 1) Continuous Assessment: 2 x Class Tests and regular attendance: 50%
2) Degree exam (50%): two-hour written paper (content: vocabulary and grammar, reading comprehension and composition).
Students must pass both the continuous assessment and the degree exam component to pass the whole course.
Feedback Feedback Students will be given written feedback on their continuous assessment tasks, including correction of their mistakes and indications of general areas for improvement. Students will also receive oral feedback in class time, including correction of their pronunciation and grammar/vocabulary mistakes.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Read and comprehend short, simple texts written in the Korean script (Hangul), on a range of topics.
  2. Comprehend basic audio passages of dialogues between native Korean speakers.
  3. Communicate at an elementary level of Korean in situations of daily routine, such as ordering food in a restaurant, discussing the weather, etc.
  4. Observe basic Korean cultural customs, such as using honorific/non-honorific language.

Please note that auditing this course is not allowed. You must be enrolled as CE (Class and Assessment including centrally arranged exam).
