SummaryThis course provides series of workshops and tutorials to the first year MA Japanese and MA Japanese and Linguistics students for essential practical skills and tips for learning Japanese as independent learners, as well as workshops as the first year preparation of the year abroad in Japan in their third year.

This course is not available to visiting students or non-honours students.
Course description Course Outline:

Effective use of technology to enhance learning is a key to success at higher education. In this course, students will develop basic knowledge of using devices, online resources, dictionaries, computer writing that are essential for learning Japanese. Sometimes speaking, listening, writing and reading skills will be covered depending on the tasks. This course will also give opportunities to students to establish their own learning styles with study plans and to work with others in a professional manner.


Learning Experience:

This course offers four workshops. Each workshop has a compulsory introductory session and one or two task completion session(s), and optional tutorials to provide extra support for tasks.

Workshop 1: How to use VLE and learning technology at UoE (Time: depending on the computer lab availability, 2 compulsory hours)

Workshop 2: How to write Japanese characters on computers (Time: depending on the computer lab availability, 2 compulsory hours)

Workshop 3: How to use mobile devices for language learning (Time: depending on the computer lab availability, 3 compulsory hours)

Workshop 4: Make an online presentation (Time: depending on the computer lab availability, 3 compulsory hours)

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. know the basic information on how to use VLE and learning technology available at UoE, as well as other online resources such as online dictionaries or tests.
  2. write Japanese characters on computers.
  3. explore ways to use mobile devices for self-study especially for Japanese language learning.
  4. organise their own self-study plan with realistic goals, and to find strategies that work for them as individual learners.
  5. work with others and manage the planning, performing and completion of the group task.
