SummaryReadings in modern Chinese history and thought, e.g. Mao Zedong etc.; the Chinese cinema and other media as an expression of Chinese thought since the twentieth century. Training in use of original language primary sources.

All students will be given a formative feedback exercise that will be helpful for the assessment for this course and students┐ general ongoing academic development.
Course description Topics covered can include:
- The "Ethnic minority question"
- The Cultural Revolution
- Religious policy and practice

What to expect from the course:
Introduction to and discussion of different topics which focus on key developments in modern Chinese history and thought. Training in reading academic and non-literary modern Chinese, discussion of analysis of key texts, and training in critical analytical thinking.

To prepare the requested reading and contribute to discussions in class. Prepare and present when required.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Understand and explain key events in specific periods of China's modern history.
  2. Explain and situate the core texts within developments in China's modern history.
  3. Analyze and critically discuss modern Chinese historical and philosophical texts.
  4. Create arguments based on use of modern Chinese historical and philosophical texts.
  5. Develop oral and written presentation skills.
