|Summary||This course is intended to give the student a grounding in railway infrastructure engineering including railway track and other infrastructure.
This course is intended to give students a grounding in railway infrastructure engineering.
Students will learn the basics of permanent way design for plain line and S&C, alignment design, along with related infrastructure such as earthworks, drainage, structures and gauging.
The course will provide a good introduction for anyone considering a career in railway civil engineering.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- describe the main components of railway permanent way and their purpose
- carry out basic calculations for the design of railway permanent way and its alignment
- explain the main relationships between railway permanent way and other infrastructure such as earthworks
- interpret basic civil engineering concepts such as structural and geotechnical engineering in a railway context
