SummaryThis is an option course for the MSc in Business Analytics programme. Performance management is a central activity in any type of business. The course will provide students with the foundations of performance measurement, evaluation, and management with a special emphasis on Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and shall cover concepts, applications, mathematical modelling, design of solutions, and analysis and communication of findings. DEA is a non-parametric methodology and as such overcomes many of the practical limitations of alternative performance evaluation methodologies.
Course description Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) is a performance evaluation and benchmarking methodology. DEA is a non-parametric and frontier-based methodology that benchmarks against the best or the worst practice frontier. Nowadays, DEA is commonly used for the relative performance evaluation and risk assessment of entities such as banks, bank branches, firms listed on stock markets, investment vehicles including projects, production technologies, suppliers, etc. This course aims at training students in the field of performance evaluation and management using DEA as the main methodology. The course shall cover the key concepts in performance management along with a general classification of performance evaluation methodologies; DEA concepts and generic methodology; static and dynamic DEA models and their use in business applications; network and dynamic network DEA models and their use in business applications; and practical issues in DEA and how to address them.
The objective of this course is to enhance students¿ understanding of the critical nature of performance measurement, evaluation, and management, and the role it plays in benchmarking, positioning of a business with respect to competition, setting performance targets and putting in place the mechanisms and tools to achieve them, and performance evaluation and risk assessment of investment alternatives. The course provides opportunities for students to learn from each other, from practitioners in the field, and from the latest theoretical and applied research in the field. The course will require students to work in groups on realistic projects in different business settings involving performance evaluation and risk assessment, and to present their work to the rest of the class and to an external panel when the projects are supplied by industry.

- Term projects (60% of the mark including a peer assessment component worth 10%) in which students will have to undertake a performance evaluation and/or risk assessment exercise including problem statement, model building, solution design, report on findings, formulation of recommendations and managerial guidelines. - Presentations (10% of the final mark) involving communication of performance problems and viable solutions to demonstrate their ability to address real world performance problems and to convince their line managers or sponsors to implement the proposed solution

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Discuss the concept and methods of performance measurement, evaluation, and management using the proper terminology
  2. Identify and properly state performance problems in different business settings
  3. Address performance problems within a DEA framework and choose the right DEA models to devise solutions
  4. Formulate managerial guidelines in the area of performance management and make recommendations
  5. Communicate performance problems and solutions effectively and efficiently to a critical audience
