SummaryThis course examines key issues in the design and methods of qualitative research projects undertaken in counselling and psychotherapy and supports students to develop specialist expertise in particular qualitative approaches. The topics covered will vary from year to year to accommodate the particular interests of students but will usually include at least some of the following: conceptualising qualitative research; conducting and analysing research interviews; autoethnography; creative methodologies; developing in-depth case studies; conducting and analysing participatory and observational methods; research ethics in counselling and psychotherapy.
Course description This course provides students with opportunities to study and develop specialist expertise in a range of advanced academic debates concerned with qualitative research design and methods in and around counselling and psychotherapy. It is especially relevant to those planning to use qualitative methods for their dissertations and theses.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Identify and conceptualise the processes involved in designing and undertaking qualitative research in counselling and psychotherapy.
  2. Critically assess the relevance of different methods of qualitative data generation and data analysis to specific research topics in counselling and psychotherapy.
  3. Synthesise discussions about qualitative research methods relevant to specific research topics in counselling and psychotherapy.
  4. Develop specialist expertise in at least one approach to qualitative research in counselling and psychotherapy.
  5. Demonstrate an advanced understanding of ethical issues in qualitative research in counselling and psychotherapy.
