SummaryThe course is based in Helmsdale, Northern Scotland. Rocks are examined and described from the W and S coasts of the Inner Moray Firth, to build up a geological history of the area. The interaction between active tectonics (faulting) and sedimentation is studied. The strata are analogues of rocks found beneath the N Sea in petroleum and CCS prospective areas.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Undertake basic fieldwork in sedimentary basins, including rock recognition, the taking of field notes, observation of field relationships, synthesis of results.
  2. Understand the of interaction between tectonics and sedimentation at a basin margin.
  3. Understand the role of analogues in interpretation of subsea geology.
  4. Synthesise information to produce geological history.
