SummaryAn Crsa Comais is an intensive language learning course designed for intermediate level learners whose aim is fluency in the language. The major focus is on language skills, both speaking and writing, but other subjects will be introduced as the course progresses. Students on An Crsa Comais undertake a three week work placement within a Gaelic medium school as part of the Greis-gnomhachais module.
Course description There is an emphasis in An Crsa Comais on developing fluency in Gaelic. An Crsa Comais develops students' language abilities and confidence in using the language through intensive language teaching approaches and by employing communicative immersion techniques. In this respect, during class contact time - particularly in lecture, tutorial and seminar group situations - students are encouraged to take an active part in discussions. Structure sessions introduce practice, and revise and drill grammar, syntax and pronunciation. These sessions are designated as times for the remediation of errors. In both courses a considerable amount of time is spent on developing oral and written skills in Gaelic and the Greis-gnomhachais module provides students with the opportunity to use Gaelic confidently and effectively in a work environment.

The SMO strategy, with regard to An Crsa Comais, will be to deliver the three main language modules as an integrated block (the other three being taught as discrete modules in the usual way). Delivery is via face to face tuition and there is contact time of 20-plus hours a week in Semester One and a little less in Semester Two when classes begin in the subject module, and when the language placement module takes students away from the college campus for three weeks. The course offers a challenging and intensive language learning environment with communicative methodologies and primary focus on oral work in the target language. The underlying philosophy for the student is to carry his/her language development forward through speech and performance, both in the spontaneous and incidental whole-class discussions which are a typical feature of day to day classroom life, and in the structured communication exercises which form the practical basis of each lesson.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Communicate clearly and effectively in Gaelic, both orally and in writing.
  2. Demonstrate comprehension of extended spoken and written text, containing detailed information, with complex structures and vocabulary.
  3. Demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of issues which are of central importance to the contemporary Highlands and Islands.
  4. Demonstrate a basic knowledge and understanding of how the Highlands and Islands emerged as a geographically and culturally distinct region of Scotland.
  5. Demonstrate language capabilities in the workplace situation, in formal contexts and in everyday social interaction and demonstrate a basic knowledge of some elements of traditional culture.

Special Arrangements 1. The one-year immersion course at Sabhal Mr Ostaig, University of the Highlands and Islands is a compulsory element of the MA Gaelic and Primary Education (Learners) programme.
2. Before selecting optional modules at Sabhal Mr Ostaig, students need to ensure they have
discussed these with their Personal Tutor at the University of Edinburgh.
3. The work-based module for University of Edinburgh students, on An Crsa Comais, will be in a Gaelic-medium school

Study Abroad This language immersion experience, in year three, has been agreed as part of the five-year undergraduate MA Gaelic and Primary Education (Learners) programme. Students will study at Sabhal Mr Ostaig for the entire academic year.
