|Students are required to look beyond their immediate environment for ideas, inspiration and challenge in relation to school leadership. This course requires them to undertake a comparative study of an identified leadership issue, by undertaking a placement in a setting in business, industry, international context ( if possible) or other public or voluntary sector environment. The outcomes of this placement are then expected to
a) Enhance their skills in data collection, analysis and evaluation
b) Inform their leadership of their school improvement project in a positive way
c) Develop greater understanding of the school culture and organisation through comparison with other organisations.
Entry Requirements (not applicable to Visiting Students)
| Applicants are required to have the following:
a) A reference from their headteacher.
b) Local Authority funding.
c) A successful outcome from a Local Authority application and interview process.
d) Current GTCS registration.
e) 5 years minimum teaching experience.

| Students will understand:
a) The importance of undertaking such a comparative study to enhance their knowledge of and practice in school leadership and management
b) How to relate their aspect of study to their analysis of the school's capacity for change and to their school improvement project
c) The importance of appropriate methodology for investigation of the school and business/industry contexts.
d) How to use basic research techniques to ensure any conclusions are based on evidence and logical argument
Students will be able to:
a) Plan a suitable comparative study in relation to their own and the school's need for further learning and development
b) Undertake all stages of the comparative study, including identifying a topic, sharing a proposal with the tutor, obtaining a placement, designing the study, analysing and presenting the findings in a suitable report.
c) Identify the relevance of their study to their school improvement project, with recommendations for self, other staff, school processes.
d) Demonstrate professional learning and growth through gaining a wider perspective on educational leadership and management.
