Summary'Developing as a Middle Leader and Manager' forms the first course (20 credits) of the Postgraduate Certificate in Middle Leadership and Management (Standard for Middle Leadership and Management), within the MEd Leadership and Learning.
Course description This course will introduce and explore the complex relationship between the role of the middle leader and manager, and other roles within the school organisation. It will critically examine middle leadership and management within local, national and international contexts. The structure of the course is designed to support participants┐ critical reflection on theory, policy, strategy and experience to inform their own professional practice. Participants will also critically review their self-evaluation against the Standard for Middle Leadership and Management and identify key priorities for their professional learning.

Additional Information (Assessment) A summative assessment of 4000 words, structured in two parts (each 2000 words; 50%) with a grade given for the overall assignment.
Feedback Formative assessment and feed-forward will be offered, structured in two stages (peer, then tutor), providing guidance on enhancing writing content, structure and style.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. demonstrate a critical understanding of the nature of middle leadership and where it sits within contemporary international theory, national policy and local practice perspectives;
  2. articulate an informed understanding of the espoused purposes of middle leadership and identify how enhanced collaborative leadership practices are intended to impact on outcomes for learners;
  3. demonstrate an evidence-informed knowledge and understanding of own collaborative leadership practices, drawing on feedback systematically gathered from colleagues;
  4. evaluate own professional practice and development against the Standard for Middle Leadership and Management drawing on research and academic literature;
  5. present and justify a professional learning plan to support identified next steps in the professional development of middle leadership and management.
