SummaryThis course in spoken and written French is designed for students who have some knowledge of French (approximately Standard Grade/GCSE level) and who wish to extend it.

All students take all elements of assessment including the degree examination (2 hours). Auditing (Class Only) is not allowed.

This course runs both in semester 1 and semester 2.

On successful completion of the course students will have the option of taking Foundation French Language 3 (ELCF07007) (20 credits), in either semester 1 or semester 2, which follows on from Foundation French Language 2 OR French 1A if you attain a mark of 50% at first sit OR French 1B if you attain a mark of 70% or more at first sit.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Knowledge and Understanding: Students will continue to develop their knowledge and understanding of the language up to the level equivalent to A1/A2 CFR. Their vocabulary will reach approximately 1000 words and phrases.
  2. Practice and Applied Knowledge, Skills and Understanding: Students continue to develop grammar, oral and aural skills as well as the ability to use them in a variety of situations. Students can produce oral and written phrases, and understand short to medium length passages.
  3. Generic Cognitive Skills: The students will develop the skill of using known material to make appropriate deductions and informed guesses about the meaning of material that is new to them. They can apply strategies for understanding specific information on a variety of topics.
  4. Communication, ICT and Numeracy Skills: Ability to conduct more complex conversations on a wider range of topics. Students will be able to communicate at a level equivalent to CEFR (A2) in the target language (both written and oral) in situations of daily routine and familiar topics. They will be able to ask and answer questions in areas of immediate need or on familiar and routine topics. The students continue to progress from learned formulaic responses towards a more spontaneous generation of language.
  5. Autonomy, Accountability and Working with Others: The course continues to develop confidence in language learning, understanding and responding to others in appropriate situations. Students continue to work individually as well as in pairs or small groups.

Auditing this course is not allowed. You must be enrolled as CE (Class and Assessment including centrally arranged exam).

Visiting students may only take the course for credits.

The first class meeting will take place in week 1. The teaching classes will start in the second week of the semester.
