SummarySpanish 2 consolidates the language skills acquired in Spanish 1A and 1B, and further develops linguistic competence through written, oral, and aural language work. It extends the students' familiarity with the history and cultural production of Spain and Latin America through the literature and film component, and aims to develop their ability to analyse works critically.
Course description Spanish 2 consolidates the language skills acquired in Spanish 1A and 1B, and further develops linguistic competence through written, oral, and aural language work. The study of a diverse range of texts and films from Spain and Latin America in the literature programme aims to deepen your knowledge of cultural responses to societal change at different historical moments and develop your ability to analyse works critically. Overall, Spanish 2 will hone the range of transferable skills gained in Spanish 1A/1B: gathering, assessing, organizing and presenting information; analysing texts critically and contextually; structuring and communicating ideas both orally and in writing; studying independently and in groups.

Pre-requisites Students MUST have passed: Spanish 1A (ELCH08001) OR Spanish 1B (ELCH08002)

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Continue to develop a more nuanced command of Spanish vocabulary, grammar and syntax; along with a critical understanding of a range of more specific areas in Spanish and Hispano-American literature and cultures.
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of the main ideas of complex language on concrete and abstract topics, and an ability to rapidly grasp the content and significance of a range of written material
  3. Write at length about topical and cultural issues in a critical manner summarising information accurately and developing a clear argument.
  4. Further develop effective communication, presentation and interaction skills across a range of media, on both an impromptu and prepared basis, providing the linguistic competence to meet with the demands of living and either studying or working in a Spanish-speaking environment.
  5. Demonstrate self-reliance, initiative, and the ability to work flexibly with others.

Additional Class Delivery Information An additional weekly language tutorial will be available in semester 1 for those students entering Spanish 2 from Spanish 1A.
