SummaryThe course focuses mainly on practical translation work from all three mainland Scandinavian languages: Danish, Norwegian and Swedish
Course description A mixture of literary and non-literary texts is used, and elements of translation theory will be touched upon from time to time. The course is designed to help students understand and translate the two Scandinavian languages that are not their main target language and to develop further their understanding of their main target language. Work is evaluated on the basis of language and translation skills. In their written work, students should seek to strike an appropriate balance between writing faithful translations and respecting the demands of English-language prose.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Translate competently from Danish, Norwegian and Swedish in a variety of styles and registers and in a range of genres.
  2. Demonstrate a good knowledge of Danish, Norwegian and Swedish vocabulary and idiom.
  3. Demonstrate an awareness of the importance of register, idiom, rhythm, nuance and ambiguity in translation.
  4. Demonstrate awareness of the syntactical and idiomatic differences between, on the one hand, English, and on the other, Danish, Norwegian and Swedish.
  5. Demonstrate a good understanding of linguistically complex texts in Danish, Norwegian and Swedish and competence in the analysis and evaluation of the translation problems that they raise.
