| Summary | A study of generic discourse in writing of the American South from the nineteenth century to the present, focus on texts by white and black authors and dealing with issues of gender as well as race. Notions of 'high' and 'popular' art will be investigated and texts will be considered in their time and place. |

Learning Outcomes
| Students will appreciate the inter-relatedness of white and black literature and will gain a balanced view of the totality of southern culture. The juxtapositioning of these texts will produce new insights and new ways of approaching hitherto diverse subjects.
