Credit level (Normal year taken)SCQF Level 10 (Year 4 Undergraduate) AvailabilityNot available to visiting students
SCQF Credits10 ECTS Credits5
SummaryThe first part of the course will introduce contemporary approaches to the study of molecular genetic variation and evolution. This will include analyses of mutation rates and molecular clocks, and methods for inferring the action of natural selection on gene sequences. It will also ocver basic aspects of phylogenetics, and recombination and the contrast between gene trees and species trees.

The remainder of the course will illustrate how these approaches are being used to provide new insights into the evolution of various groups of organisms. There will be particular focus on the origins and evolution of modern humans and some of their parasites and pathogens. This will include the origins and evolution of protozoa(Plasmodium species which cause malaria) bacteria (e.g. Yersinia pesti, the cause of plague) and various viruses (e.g. the AIDS virus HIV-1, and influenza viruses.
