|Summary||This course will describe stem cells, embryonic and induced pluripotent stem cells as well as lineage restricted adult stem cells and how embryonic development gives rise to the range of cells, tissues and organs of the body.

Each student will produce 3 written critiques of specified key scientific papers in the relevant subject area and will present these critiques in a moderated discussion. Each critique will be a maximum length of 2000 words.

- understand the contribution that animal models have made to the study of development, and how they continue to give insights into human development.
- gain an understanding of the different types of stem cells and of the concept of potency with respect to stem cells.
- understand how ┐stemness┐ is maintained at the level of the organisation and activity of the genome as well as the transcriptome and proteome.
- Understand how normal development operates to produce the cells, tissues and organs of the body
