| Summary | The main objective of Greek 1C is to advance the student's knowledge of the Classical Greek language and to develop the ability to read independently in Classical Greek with linguistic and literary understanding. |
| Course description |
This course will focus on Greek grammar and syntax, unseen translation from Greek to English, and reading and interpretation of prescribed prose and verse texts. In lectures attention is paid to linguistic and literary aspects of the texts, to cultural and historical contexts, and to generic affiliations. In tutorials attention is paid to the honing of students' expertise in the reading and writing of Greek, and in literary and textual criticism.

Coursework: this is made up of two components accounting each for 20% of the total mark, i.e. one coursework essay of c. 2000 words at the end of the teaching term, and tutorial work throughout the teaching term.
Degree Examination: one 2-hour paper.
Failure to submit the essay will result in a Force Fail for the course, even if the overall mark is above 40.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- demonstrate in coursework and examination a wider and deeper knowledge of the structure and idiom of the Greek language;
- demonstrate in coursework and examination an enhanced ability to locate works of Greek literature in their literary, social, historical, and intellectual contexts;
- demonstrate in coursework and examination an ability to analyse and pass informed critical judgment on specific works and passages;
- demonstrate especially in their coursework essay an ability to locate and use relevant forms of primary and secondary evidence in building up a coherent and relevant argument.
