SummaryThis course will assist students to develop a critical appraisal of the theoretical approaches in relation to understanding the experiences of people living with both an intellectual disability and dementia. To evaluate the effectiveness of models of care for people with dementia, when applied to people with an intellectual disability within real-world working practice. As well as engaging in an online learning environment including contribution to discussion boards and the development of a case study report and final assignment.
Course description This course aims to gain a critical understanding of the historical and theoretical context of the experiences of people with an intellectual disability who develop dementia. In addition the appreciation of international research, as well as policy and practice developments of people living with an intellectual disability and dementia.

Additional Information (Assessment) For the case study report students will develop a care and support system based on a real-world working practice example. They will contribute to this weekly based on their learning and reading. The case study will incorporate elements from course content, plus additional material independently sourced by the student. This case report will incorporate project based and problem based learning. A template will be provided for the case report although students have the flexibility to add additional detail. Content will include text, reflection, hyper-links and future planning information based on policy and good practice guidance. The summative assignment relates practice and policy developments of people with both an intellectual disability and dementia.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. A critical understanding of the historical context of people with an intellectual disability.
  2. An analysis of models of care for people with an intellectual disability and dementia.
  3. An appreciation of the similarities and differences in dementia and dementia care experienced by people with an intellectual disability and by the general population.
  4. An analysis of models of care for people with an intellectual disability and dementia.
