| Course description |
Accounts of language - its structure, origin, functions and use - have been produced since ancient times, across a broad range of cultures. This course surveys those traditions, along with the methodological issues that they raise. The aim is to understand the background of linguistics as currently practised, along with how it has come to be situated where it is with respect to related fields.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
