SummaryThis course provides an account of the structure of Modern Scots dialects and Scottish English by examining variation in phonology, morphology, syntax and lexis from diachronic, synchronic and geographical perspectives.
Course description The course will thus combine dialectological, sociolinguistic and formal linguistic issues, and aims to introduce students to research results and methodology in these areas.

It will primarily be concerned with:

- discussion of the issues involved in the definition of Scots and Scottish English
- analysis of the historical development and key linguistic features of Scots and Scottish English
- investigation of geographical and social variation in Scotland
- description of resources available for the analysis of Scots and Scottish English
- critical examination of previous research on these varieties

  1. explain the issues involved in the definition of Scots and Scottish English
  2. use key resources and primary linguistic literature for the analysis of features found in the varieties concerned
  3. understand current issues in variation and change in Scots and Scottish English
  4. conduct their own research into the varieties spoken in Scotland, if they so choose

Graduate Attributes and Skills Students will understand the relationship, historical and modern, between Scots and English Scotland, and how they vary. This is fundamental for anyone working in Scotland, within education, the media etc. The students will also be given the opportunity to hone their writing and argument skills.
