SummaryThis course will address the conduct of research in clinical education; it will enable the student to be an engaged consumer of research and prepare those progressing to completion of a research project and award of the MSc in Clinical Education.

More specifically the following areas will be considered:
- Research in clinical education: issues and challenges
- An overview of the research process
- Research or evaluation?
- Generating a research question
- Selecting a methodology
- Ethical issues in researching clinical education
- Locating and appraising the literature
- Qualitative methodologies and quantitative designs
- Systematic reviews and qualitative evidence synthesis
- Commonly used methods
- Approaches to analysis (qualitative and quantitative)
- Writing a research report and writing for publication

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Define and undertake a systematic search of the clinical education literature.
  2. Critically appraise published clinical education literature and research.
  3. Compare and contrast different methodologies used in clinical education research.
  4. Apply understanding of ethical concepts, issues and processes in research in Clinical Education.
  5. Design a coherent research study, including defining a gap in the existing literature, formulating a research question, articulating the methodology and selecting appropriate research methods.
