|Summary||This course is designed to develop further the contrapuntal skills acquired in previous years, and to foster a deeper understanding of the processes in reconciling the horizontal (counterpoint) and the vertical (harmony).

|Pre-requisites||Visiting students should have at least three Music courses at grade B or above in Music Theory (or be predicted to obtain this). We will only consider University/College level courses.

||Two coursework exercises (35% each) and one 3-hour examination in the May examination diet (30%).
||Students will receive verbal formative feedback throughout the year in fortnightly seminars, for which regular exercises will be set.
Written, formative feedback will be provided on a feedback sheet for the two assessed coursework assignments and these will also be discussed in tutorials.
Students will also be provided with the opportunity to view examination scripts in a specially-arranged session.
Formative written feedback is provided within 15 working days of the submission date.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- On completion of this course students will have learned to write vocal counterpoint in 16th-century styles, mainly those of Palestrina and Byrd, either by completing the lower voices of an extract (top voice given) or by completing a piece from a given opening.
- Students will have learned to analyse 18th-century fugal styles, especially those of J.S. Bach and G. F. Handel, and to write fugues in these styles in three and four instrumental parts.
- They will have learned a deeper understanding of the processes involved in reconciling the horizontal (counterpoint) and the vertical (harmony) dimensions in music of the renaissance and baroque eras

||Taught in individual tutorials in Weeks 1,3,5,7,9,11 in Semester 1 and Semester 2. Students assigned to tutorial times in Freshers Week.
