| Summary | This course encourages students to take enjoyment in sociological ideas and apply them in everyday life. The course aims to induct first year students into the Sociology subject area and help students to develop the sociological study skills required at university level.
Students MUST be in year 1 of a Sociology degree programme (single or combined honours) or Sustainable Development with Sociology as their main subject. Students taking degree programmes in other subjects may not take this course |

This course is assessed through a combination of attendance, a Sociological Diary, and a class presentation (the latter two completed in Semester 2). In addition students are required to prepare in advance for the activities to be carried out in a group (when relevant) and to contribute to the discussion in your group. Attendance is recorded at every class. |

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Gain competence and confidence in the key study skills of literature searching, critical sociological thinking and evaluating online sources
- Learn how to present sociological ideas effectively in writing and orally
- Learn how to improve sociological understanding and the standard of assessed work through learning from feedback and from peers
- Learn how to interpret basic numerical sociological information presented in tables and graphically
- Be able to apply sociological ideas in thinking about the media, popular culture, and other dimensions of everyday life
