SummaryThis course is designed to introduce students to visual expressions of Christology through Western Art in the late medieval period and the Renaissance. It is structured around themes from the church year (Christmas to Ascension) and introduces students to the uses of paintings in various contexts (ecclesiastical, domestic), symbolism, painting techniques and broad historical background. Visits to galleries and museums will form an important part of the work of the class.

Pre-requisitesVisiting students should have at least 3 History of Art or Divinity/Religious Studies courses at grade B or above (or be predicted to obtain this). We will only consider University/College level courses.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course participants should be able to do the following: describe paintings from the course critically, with an eye to detail and Christological meanings conveyed; describe the way certain painting techniques and resources express the theology of the period of a painting; describe how images of Christ were used as devotional aids in different contexts and periods; demonstrate an ability to identify key terms and their meanings; demonstrate good judgement about how to judge the relative importance of items on course bibliographies.
