Entry into Honours: (1)students must pass courses to the required value of 240 credits in the first two years; (2)students must achieve 50% or more at first attempt in all required second-year courses for their registered degree; (3)students must achieve at least 50% overall in the relevant second-year language course(s), including at least 50% in the language component of that course.
Progression to English Language Honours requires (1) an *average* of 50% across all obligatory LEL2 courses, achieved on the first sitting, (2) a minimum of 40% in each obligatory LEL2 course, achieved on the first or second sitting.
All courses (including outside subjects) must be passed before embarking on the year abroad, an outside course passed at Resit in August will be acceptable.
Students may take either (i) MEL dissertation preparation in year 3 and MEL dissertation completion in year 4 or (ii) Dissertation Preparation Abroad (Language Sciences) in year 3 and Dissertation Completion following Study Abroad (Language Sciences) in year 4. If students take option (ii), they must spend their year abroad at a university where they can study appropriate courses in English Language (see the regulations for Year Abroad Work for Degrees in German and English Language for full details).
During 3rd year: at least 30 weeks must be spent in a relevant country and prescribed work completed in English Language and the relevant language.
Final Assessment: One unit of assessment is allocated to every 20 credits and constitutes one 20-credit paper. The following are the twelve 20-credit papers on which the classification of the degree is based. (Papers that for the purposes of degree classification acquire a weighting of 40 credits are, therefore, listed twice.).
1. German 4 Honours Language Paper 1.
2. German 4 Honours Language Paper 1.
3. German 4 Honours Language Paper 2.
4. German Oral.
5. Year abroad work for MEL / LEL degrees.
6. Year abroad work for MEL / LEL degrees.
7. MEL Dissertation Preparation (same mark as 8) OR MEL Year Abroad Assessment OR LEL Preparation Abroad.
8. MEL Dissertation Completion OR Dissertation completion following study abroad (Language Sciences) OR MEL Long Essay.
9. Honours course option in German.
10. Courses in Language Sciences.
