SummaryThe course introduces a variety of styles of Sanskrit language and literature, including pre-classical and prose and verse kavya. In addition, time will be spent in translating English into Sanskrit and in writing essays on selected topics relating to classical Indian civilisation.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. develop their familiarity with the Sanskrit language and the literary, intellectual and religious culture of ancient India.
  2. build upon previous knowledge of Sanskrit to translate and analyse a range of texts of intermediate level from a variety of periods composed in several genres.
  3. develop skills in acquiring knowledge of a linguistic and literary culture which they will be able to transfer to study of other languages and literatures.
  4. communicate their understanding of the linguistic and textual culture of ancient India.
  5. develop skills based on their independent work and interact with class colleagues in communal study of Sanskrit language and its literature.
