SummaryThe aim of the course is to promote sociocultural/sociolinguistic awareness and learning for advanced learners of Japanese to use language beyond the academic classroom. Students are expected to develop their intercultural, interpersonal and linguistic competences for professional purposes upon entering the workforce. Students will be lead to the level of Japanese Language Proficiency Test N2/N1 or Common European Framework of Reference for Languages level B2/C1.
Course description The course aims to help students to become effective communicators in 'real life' situations by encouraging them to develop the skills necessary to judge cultural/linguistic appropriateness in a given situation.

Classes cover all four skills including (1) academic and practical Japanese writing, (2) advanced Japanese language skills, and (3) research and oral/written presentation skills in Japanese.

All students will be given formative feedback exercises that will be helpful for the assessment of this course and for general academic development.

Pre-requisites Students MUST have passed: ( Japanese Year Abroad 3 (Single) (ASST10127) OR Japanese Year Abroad 3 (Combined) (ASST10129)) AND Japanese Language 3 (ASST10128)

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Write clear, well-structured texts of complex subjects, underlining the relevant salient issues, expanding and supporting points of view at some length with subsidiary points, reasons and relevant examples, and rounding off with an appropriate conclusion
  2. Understand in detail a wide range of lengthy, complex texts likely to be encountered in social, professional or academic life, identifying finer points of detail including attitudes and implied as well as stated opinions
  3. Engage in informed discussion about key issues in Japanese social practices, culture, and language
  4. Appraise patterns, make predictions, and analyse similarities and differences between two languages and cultures
  5. Develop interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational communication skills for professional situations
