SummaryThis course will look closely at the history of the decline of the Welsh, Irish and Scottish Gaelic languages, especially from the eighteenth century onwards, and at the various revitalisation initiatives that have been put in place from the end of the nineteenth century onwards. Emphasis will be placed on practical matters related to contemporary language policy and planning, using theoretical and analytical insights from a range of disciplines, including linguistics, sociology and geography. The course will be delivered partly in Gaelic and partly in English.

Learning Outcomes
The Intended Learing Outcomes are the development of a sound knowledge of the key developments relating to the decline and revitalisation of the Celtic languages. This will include an understanding of key aspects of sociolinguistic theory and key issues in language planning.
