SummaryFirstly, students undertake two case study projects working in small groups. Each case study typically entails the design of a single unit operation, for example a heat exchanger, reactor or distillation column. The case studies, which are carried out sequentially, are followed by a group design project which is carried out in larger groups and generates the preliminary process design and costing of a complete plant.

In these activities, especially the group design, stress is laid on effective teamwork and communication both within the group and to a wider audience of staff, fellow students and industrial visitors.

Pre-requisites Students MUST have passed: Solids Processing 3 (CHEE09008) AND Engineering Project Management 4 (MAEE10005) AND Heat, Mass and Momentum Transfer 3 (CHEE09013) AND Chemical Engineering Kinetics and Catalysis 3 (CHEE09010)
Co-requisites Students MUST also take: Chemical Engineering Design: Synthesis and Economics 4 (CHEE10005) AND Chemical Engineering Design 4 (CHEE10010)

Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, the student should be able to:

1. Work on complex, open-ended technical problems.
2. Communicate effectively within and outwith the group.
3. Develop solutions as part of a team, as well as undertaking individual technical effort in achieving them.
4. Solve open-ended design problems under appropriate constraints, including technical requirements, environmental and sustainability limitations, health, safety and risk assessment issues and appreciation of public perception and concerns.
5. Make decisions on the basis of incomplete and contradictory information; work with multiple design objectives; and justify the choices and decisions taken.
6. Write concise, informative reports on the design work undertaken.
7. Present and ¿sell¿ their team work to a panel of academic and industrial experts.
8. Develop time-management skills due to report and presentation deadlines being imposed.
