SummaryA level 9 laboratory project for visiting students. The project will be in the third year organic teaching laboratory, or, with prior agreement, in a research group.
Course description The visiting student will work in the third year organic teaching laboratory for approximately 12 hours per week for 10 weeks, undertaking synthetic work based on experiments undertaken by our third year class. In addition, the visiting student will also participate in two transferable skills exercises, delivering an oral presentation on an academic topic and a problem-based learning group exercise.
Exceptionally, the visiting student may join one of our research groups for their laboratory project. This is only if the visiting student has the agreement of research group before arriving.

Feedback Feedback will be provided through regular meetings with the lab supervisor. Feedback on written work will also be provided at the final report writing stage through proof-reading of a draft report. Group feedback will be provided on the poster and problem-based learning exercise.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Execute a defined project within an approved area of chemistry, working effectively under guidance and in ways which show a clear awareness of own and others' responsibilities and demonstrate skills in assessment of personal safety, and the safety of others, in the laboratory environment
  2. Show competence in a range of experimental techniques appropriate to synthetic organic chemistry.
  3. Gain experience in group working
