SummaryThis course is a 3-month placement of 3rd year PhD students to work with a commercial partner. The range of potential placement destinations for students includes instrument manufacturers, technical consultancies, IP attorneys and policy advisors.

Students will work on a project for their placement hosts which is not necessarily related to their PhD research and which allows them the opportunity to experience a non-academic work environment. Students can expect to gain a first-hand experience of a range of perspectives on industrial practices, policy, innovation and entrepreneurship.

A set of objectives and a plan for the placement will be agreed between the student, the commercial supervisor and the academic supervisor prior to commencement. The student and both supervisors will meet 4 weeks into the placement to ensure that appropriate progress is being made and that no issues have arisen that put the student┐s progress at risk. On completion of the placement the student will write a report which will be assessed by both supervisors.
