Summary | The course consists of a research project in an area of contemporary chemical physics research. The aim is to acquire the necessary skills to perform chemical or physical research in a professional academic research environment. The research project forms part of the Honours curriculum for students on the MChemPhys degree programmes in Chemical Physics with a Year in Industry and Chemical Physics with a Year Abroad. |
Course description |
The research project is carried out in the research group of a member of the academic staff in the School of Chemistry or School of Physics and Astronomy. The initial direction of the research project is defined in preliminary meetings with the academic supervisor.
During the research project the student is required to review the background of the area, and to carry out appropriate experimental or theoretical work. The supervisor and senior researchers from the research group will give guidance and feedback at several stages throughout the duration of the project. Towards the end of the project the student will present and their research to a small audience, and also write a short project report.

The course is assessed entirely on the basis of coursework. Full details of the assessment of each element of the course and the corresponding performance descriptors will be available via Learn. |
Feedback |
Feedback will be available on a day-to-day basis as arranged with senior researchers and the academic supervisor. It is expected that the student will be pro-active in seeking and acting on feedback from members of the research group. The student and supervisor will meet to review progress at the end of Semester 1. Written and oral feedback on drafts of the oral presentation and on the project report will be available to allow the student to mature their presenting, writing and reporting skills. |

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate a high level of understanding on a topic relating to contemporary chemical physics research.
- Plan, execute and develop a defined project of research, working with substantial autonomy in a professional research environment.
- Obtain, analyse, and critically appraise and interpret research results.
- Deliver a professional presentation and defence of the research to a non-specialist scientific audience.
- Write a detailed report that demonstrates advanced understanding of technical aspects of the research undertaken, and an original critical analysis of the research results.
