Course description |
This broad subject will use a lecture format to lay the essential foundations that you will continue to build on in the next three years to cover general anatomy, physiology and biochemistry and histology. You will also begin to explore the oral cavity though lectures and practical sessions giving you the basis to further your knowledge in semester 2.
An important part of Health and Disease provides you with the knowledge to understand the relationships between human disease and oral health and how medical disorders impact on the management of the patient and their dental health.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Develop a knowledge of anatomy, physiology, oral biology and biochemistry relevant to dental hygiene and therapy and be confident in applying this knowledge and understanding to the management of patients.
- Be familiar with the main medical disorders that may impinge on dental treatment
- Be familiar with the complex interactions between oral health, nutrition, general health, drugs and diseases that can have an impact on dental care and disease.
- Explain the impact of medical conditions in the patient
