| Summary | This course will investigate a range of core principles, concepts and defining features of the usage of internal construction materials. With a creative, practical and hands-on approach, students will explore materiality through processes of drawing and making. Through a series of group seminars and practical workshops, students will research, gather, draw, build and experiment with materials. The course will introduce a key theme or topic around which students will design, construct and then reimagine interior design details in a variety of materials, as part of a personal creative response to a set brief. |
| Course description |
This course will challenge students to think in a variety of ways about material specification, and also to develop critical insight into their own decision-making process and design work. Seminars, discussions and group work will focus on increasing the students understanding of why designers select particular interior construction materials, the perceived qualities of the former, and their appropriateness to project- and space-specific considerations of function and place.
The course will involve use of ECA's wood and metal workshops, in order to allow students to experiment in materiality through a hand-on approach, engaging with relevant materials in a live context, in order to develop new methods within and approaches to their individual design practice.

Other requirements | This course is open to ALL STUDENTS and enrolments are managed on a first come first served basis until the course is full. The course will be open to enrolments from Thursday 13th September at 9.30am. Please sign up for the course through your own School (they will advise if this is done your PT, SSO or Teaching Office). Formative feedback and Assessment:
Interim group presentations and weekly tutorials constitute verbal feedback from peers and staff throughout the semester.
In Week Six students submit an edited version of work to date for formative assessment by staff at this stage; at which point a formative grade and written feedback is given.
Summative Feedback and Assessment:
At the end of Semester One, students submit a final edited version of work, for summative assessment by staff. Each student will complete a self-evaluation as part of the submission process at this point.
A summative grade and written feedback will be provided.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Evaluate a body of research work and select and realise suitable project solutions through structured and transparent methodologies.
- Show independent design initiative in developing an adventurous and coherent visual vocabulary in order to externalise design ideas.
- Demonstrate and apply knowledge of material selection and specification and basic principles of construction detailing.
