SummaryStudents undertaking this course will develop key intermediate creative skills in Visual Communication for Fashion, through sessions exploring creative drawing from a life model, studio based drawing workshops, talks and visits to relevant exhibitions/archives. The ability to understand and visually interpret silhouette, volume, materials and texture through drawing is a vital element in enabling students to communicate and present their work to the fashion industry and a wider audience. Concepts of body diversity, the ergonomics of the body and the relationship between the body, clothing and human emotions are key to a student's understanding of fashion illustration in relation to a more inclusive demographic. Students will integrate a synthesis of research, discussion and practical drawing sessions exploring a range of methods and techniques.
Course description This course enables students to develop intermediate level drawing methods and techniques through a creative exploration of fashion sketch, fashion illustration, drawing for surfaces/textures, drawing for accessory design, and divergent approaches to page composition and layout.

The course builds on previously acquired drawing/illustration skills in the Fashion Illustration and Communication Elective but can also be delivered as a stand-alone course for students with pre-existing basic drawing skills with an interest in Fashion Communication. The course philosophy is embedded in the research-led practice and ethos of the Fashion Department in encouraging students to develop acute awareness of the importance to convey a broader spectrum of body and beauty diversity within their fashion design and communication methods.

Students undertaking this course will develop the following key intermediate level creative skills in Drawing for Fashion:

Research: An awareness and understanding of contemporary and historical fashion illustration, methods, techniques and key exponents of this art form, is a fundamental catalyst to a student's own creative exploration. Students will undertake formative research into fashion illustration through historical and contemporary fashion analysis.

Practical Drawing Skills: The ability to understand and interpret silhouette, construction, volume and texture through drawing is a key element in enabling students to communicate and present their work to the fashion industry and to a wider audience. Through practical studio based sessions, students will explore and develop individual drawing skills through the following methods; drawing from a life model, drawing for fashion sketch, drawing for fashion illustration, exploration of surface textures and drawing for fashion accessories.

Understanding the architecture of the body for clothing: The concepts of body diversity, the ergonomics of the body and the relationship between the body, clothing and human emotions are key to a student's understanding of fashion illustration in relation to a wider, more inclusive demographic. Through practical studio based sessions, students will experiment with various drawing media and techniques and will explore body language, anatomy, form, mass, proportions, gender, age, ethnicity and the interaction between clothing and the body.

Presentation Skills: Communicating an individual fashion design aesthetic is key to an outward facing portfolio of work. Students will develop key skills in the selection, editing and presentation of their fashion illustration within a range of professional methods.
