SummaryThis module will bring together a consideration of the principles underlying the establishment of scientifically sound ecological management in conservation programmes and the economic, legislative and practical measures for implementing them. Through case studies we will see how the practical and social context of conservation interacts with scientific theory for the mitigation of perceived conflicts between man and wildlife.

Learning Outcomes
Students will gain an integrated knowledge of the principal areas of conservation management and an understanding of how these relate to practical conservation projects. They will demonstrate a critical understanding of the principles underlying the establishment of scientifically sound ecological management in conservation programmes and the economic, legislative and practical measures for implementing them. They will also understand the importance of the social and economic context of conservation management and be familiar with the practical constraints. This understanding will be informed by recent relevant literature and communication with senior professionals in the field of conservation.

From this students will gain an appreciation of the need for a scientific underpinning of conservation management programmes and will be able to critically assess the relative merits and demerits of practical conservation measures. The use of case studies will enable students to develop a detailed understanding of how the practical and social context of conservation interacts with scientific theory for the mitigation of perceived conflicts between man and wildlife.

Students will be given the opportunity to practise in professional level contexts through the study visit to the Cairngorms and will be expected to offer professional level interpretations of encountered problems.

There are no course text books. Students will be directed to relevant papers and other reading material throughout the course.
