SummaryThe aim is help participants to develop a theoretical understanding of the process of investigating their own teaching and students¿ learning to enable then to carry out their own educational research.
Course description The course begins from the premise that we can combine our own academic practice with effective educational research practice. This can include qualitative and quantitative research, reflective accounts of practice and other diverse forms of enquiry. The course will work through a step-by- step process of planning, implementing, analysing and reporting research. It will identify different approaches / methods and the kinds of problems they can be used to address. Through this process it aims to enable participants to carry out their own independent educational research that is robust and valid on their own / their students¿ practice. To provide a realistic context participants will be asked to design research proposal using guidelines from the Principal¿s Teaching Award Scheme (PTAS). They will not be required to submit the proposal to the scheme but may do so if they wish.

Feedback Participants will end the first block with some formative feedback on their initial plans and will use this information to develop their research plans further before block two commences. They will also be encouraged to look at the PTAS website as a preparation for the summative assignment as a formative task.
PTAS will be introduced to participants and the focus of the session will move towards how they will design and carry out research within the framework of this scheme. They will move through a series of guided activities (again with peer and course leader support) and by the end of the session participants will have an action plan for carrying out their project and also for the summative assignment (a funding application using PTAS guidelines). Formative feedback will be an intrinsic part of this process.
Feedback will be given on the summative assignment.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. frame researchable questions appropriate to their working context and make informed choices regarding approaches, theoretical frameworks and methodologies to investigate research questions.
  2. gather, reflect on and interpret evidence in relation to their teaching and their students¿ learning. They will be able to apply their insights and findings in order to improve their own practice
  3. publically share and review insights and findings with other educators through presentations, publications, performances, personal contact and peer review in order to improve practice beyond their own context.
