SummaryThis course will equip students to make a research contribution in Linguistics & English Language.

Lectures will be held in Semester 1, and students attend Linguistic Circle talks which are held throughout the year (MSc Applied Linguistics students, or those enrolled on Introduction to Discourse Analysis) must attend the Linguistic Circle only in Semester 2).
Course description The course focuses on understanding and evaluating existing research, principles of research design and hypothesis testing, and effective communication of research findings.

Additional Information (Assessment) Short assignments will be designed to give students practice with the research techniques discussed in class.

The course is assessed as pass / fail with coursework that students bring to class for discussion and assessment together (e.g., questions from readings and practice at writing abstracts). A final passing mark will be based on participation in more than half of the assignments.
Feedback Formative feedback will include in-class discussions of assignments and written answers to questions relating to assignments.
