| Course description |
This course is a single training module, housed only on Learn, for MSc students to be trained in general research ethics and to consider the ethical aspects of their dissertation project. It should be completed by all MSc students who plan to conduct a research project involving human subjects or other ethically sensitive material prior to the submission of their ethical protocol for review by members of the PPLS Ethical Review Panel. The course introduces students to the complex issues around the ethics of conducting research with live, human participants, and further guides students in the planning and organizing skills of linguistic research. Competency in research ethics is of increasing professional importance, and the entirety of the course constitutes a valuable transferable skill.
The course is specifically aimed at preparing MSc students for dissertation work, but it can be completed by any MSc student who is expecting to undertake an individual research project that involves ethical considerations, even if the project is for coursework. The decision of whether or not a student should take the training module is up to the instructor or supervisor, whichever is more relevant to the situation.
The module contains some information about what research ethics is and then asks the student to take a couple of short quizzes to gauge comprehension. Once the students have passed those quizzes satisfactorily, they are guided through questions related to the ethical considerations of their specific research project. Students can take the quizzes as many times as they need to. For students who approach the task fully prepared, it is expected that the total completion of the module should take no more than an hour.

Completion of the module triggers a meeting with the student's supervisor, which triggers a submission to the ethical review panel, which makes it possible to review and approve the student's research proposal. The whole process is expected to take between 3-5 weeks from the point of completion of the module. |
