SummaryImpressionism marked the dawn of modern art: a dramatic break with tradition in the midst of a rapidly urbanising and industrialising society. The course will examine key factors which influenced the paintings of Manet, Monet and their colleagues. The themes of light and colour, women and landscape will be explored to reveal the complex meanings behind these works.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Understanding of the social and historical context of Impressionist painting;



  2. Ability to describe and analyse Impressionist works, including discussing the connection between form and content in paintings.
  3. Evaluation of the role of social factors in the making of art.
  4. Demonstration of the above through the assessment.
