Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- On completion of this course students will have learned to write vocal counterpoint in 16th-century styles, mainly those of Palestrina and Byrd, either by completing the lower voices of an extract (top voice given) or by completing a piece from a given opening.
- Students will have learned to analyse 18th-century fugal styles, especially those of J.S. Bach and G. F. Handel, and to write fugues in these styles in three and four instrumental parts.
- They will have learned a deeper understanding of the processes involved in reconciling the horizontal (counterpoint) and the vertical (harmony) dimensions in music of the renaissance and baroque eras
