| Summary | This course will provide an introduction to historical and contemporary issues in the organology of wind and percussion instruments, using the resources of the Edinburgh University Collection of Historic Musical Instruments (EUCHMI).
Aspects studied will include the design, manufacture, playing techniques, repertoire and the social position and background of the instrument makers and customers. The organological literature, iconographic sources and surviving historical musical instruments will be studied and evaluated. |
| Course description |
The historical, technical, social, and musical factors which have shaped instrument design since the Middle Ages are examined in relation to some of the most important developments in the instruments belonging to the main families. Students will look closely at surviving instruments where possible and use the primary and secondary literature to gain an understanding of the invention and evolution of instruments.
Weekly two-hour tutorials will be held in the Collection galleries at the Reid Concert Hall Museum of Instruments.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Become familiar with the design, manufacture, playing techniques and repertoire oppropriate to the various types of wind and percussion instruments. They will have been introduced to a selection of instruments in the Edinburgh University Collection, and will have gained an understanding of their design and historical importance.
- Gain an understanding of the various different types of early instruments of the wind and percussion families and how they relate to each of the family types.
- Demonstrate an understanding of earlier hand-working techniques and how these techniques affect the final output from different workshops, giving an insight into acceptable variations in seemingly identical objects.
- Gain a thorough understanding of the design approach (pitch, range etc) found in different instrument-making schools, and how this approach was followed during the construction phase.
