|Summary||Sustainable Food Production is about exploring and then highlighting the potential solutions to the challenges that are being faced with regards to food production. These challenges include:
water and soil resource management, crop nutrition requirements;
genetic base of production;
the need to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture.
This course explores the conflicts and trade-off among the objectives that are required of food systems. Using health and welfare as central concepts, the course will examine what is required for a healthy environment (including specific resources such as soil), human health and welfare, healthy crops and livestock and the extent to which attempting to maximise any one of these may (or not) lead to conflicts with others.
Following an introductory session, the course covers a range of relevant topics and is taught by specialists.

||There are 4 pieces of course assessment, namely;
¿ A critical review of an academic journal article. The review is 1000 words and it should question the information and opinions in the article in an attempt to evaluate or judge its scientific worth overall. This must be submitted before noon on Monday 4th March 2019, and accounts for 35% of the total marks.
¿ A 10 minute group presentation will be given. It will focus on resource use in a specified continent. This will be assessed in class and the presentation. In addition, a 750 word reflective log would be submitted. This will be worth 20% of the total marks.
¿ A policy brief which will focus on one of the key topics covered in the lectures. The policy brief will be 750 words, and it should be understandable by the intelligent lay person. The article should signpost contemporary research findings that have policy relevance /general interest in the short, medium or longer term. This must be submitted before noon on Monday 8th April, 2018, and accounts for 35% of the total marks.
¿ A 5 minute presentation will be given to the class on your chosen topic for the policy brief. You are asked to assume that a government minister(s) for food and the environment has read your article and asked you to present on the key messages. The presentation must be submitted by noon on Wednesday 3rd April, 2018 to present on Thursday 4th April, 2019.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Have an understanding of the global context of food security including its political, economic, social and environmental components.
- Identify the main trade-offs that might exist between food security and other desirable goals.
- Carry out independent research (either practical or desk-based) and produce reports of the research in a number of different formats (e.g. written, verbal).
- Be competent in constructing logically sound arguments and analysing scientific theories and data-generating methodologies (e.g. experiments, surveys).
