Summary | This course builds on the cell to system approach introduced in year 1, to explore biological processes and resources involved in the use of animals in local, national and global agri-food systems.
This Course is suitable for all students that have satisfactorily completed Year 1 of the Course. Progression will require students to achieve a pass mark in both the ICA and end of module examination combined.

Course description |
This course will develop a knowledge and comprehension of animal science and production in monogastrics (e.g. pigs and horses), ruminants (e.g. cattle and sheep), poultry and fish. The main themes covered will include:
¿ Production systems
¿ Genetics
¿ Reproduction
¿ Nutrition
¿ Health and disease
¿ Behaviour and welfare
This course will be delivered by a series of lectures, tutorials, laboratory classes and practicals. A wide range of farm visits including commercial units will be utilised to demonstrate different production systems, and how they may influence animal health and productivity.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge of key biological concepts (genetics, reproduction, nutrition, health, behaviour) relevant to animal production systems worldwide.
- Evidence how these key biological concepts are integrated, applied and managed in animal systems.
- Undertake a synthesis of ideas, concepts, information and issues within animal production.
- Use a wide range of skills to quantify and communicate the biological and other processes involved in animal production.
- Work independently, and with others, to develop an understanding of animal systems.
