SummaryThe aim of this course/module is to enable candidates to extend and consolidate the clinical knowledge and skills they will have gained at undergraduate level, and the foundation skills developed as part of their A module. The candidate will be able to evaluate their own standards of practice and develop strategies for continuous improvement in the future, and in particular, when progressing to their C modules.
Course description This assessment-only course forms part of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) postgraduate Certificate in Advanced Veterinary Practice (Cattle) or (Sheep). Students wishing to achieve these certificates will need to complete the following modules: A-FAVP.1 Foundations in Advanced Veterinary Practice, B-PAP.2, and three other C modules (from designated modules) plus one other B or C module. Upon completion of all the necessary modules, a further synoptic assessment will be required.

This course focuses on the evaluation and management of production animal clinical cases and population/herd/flock health disease problems, population health and welfare, and a basic overview of therapeutics and surgical practice.

Additional Information (Assessment) - Three case reports (maximum of 1500 words each) which should cover different areas of the module syllabus content document provided in the learning environment (75%)

- Critical review (1000 words) of one article in a refereed scientific publication relevant to the module syllabus. This should not be a review paper. (25%)

All cases are to have been managed by the student. Cases selected should demonstrate that the student has dealt competently with a range of commonly presented conditions or situations from the area of practice in which they are working.

Cases should be recent, with ¿recent¿ indicating cases seen preferably within the period of registration. Where this is not possible, i.e. due to late registration, cases seen within the last 2 years will be acceptable.
Feedback Students will have the option to submit drafts of one case study for formative written feedback to aid in preparation for submission.

Full written feedback will be provided with results, and students are encouraged to contact the programme team to discuss if they have any queries.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Apply pathophysiological knowledge, epidemiological principles and evidence-based approaches (including selection of appropriate diagnostic procedures) to the evaluation and management of individual clinical cases and population problems in a chosen area of production animal veterinary practice
  2. Apply therapeutic and surgical principles, including anaesthesia and sedation, to the management of clinical and population health problems in a chosen area of production animal veterinary practice
  3. Describe use of diagnostic imaging in their practice premises and (where applicable) in the field, including quality control procedures in place that allow for the safe production of diagnostic images
  4. Provide practical advice on population health and welfare in a chosen area of production animal practice
  5. Discuss the practical application of available information technologies for improving animal health and production
