|Summary||This course will focus on the diagnosis, management and treatment of equine neurological problems. It will be structured as a five-week, lecture-based distance learning course with interactive elements, regular discussion and student feedback through engagement.
This course will provide students with high-quality SCQF level 11 specialised skills in dealing with equine neurological problems.
This five-week course is fully taught online through a mixture of recorded presentations, formative activities and asynchronous discussion. Live non-compulsory sessions may be scheduled depending on student group availability and time zones.
The course will focus on the following topics:
- Clinical neuroanatomy and the neuroanatomic basis of locomotion.
- How to perform a neurological examination in a horse.
- The ataxic horse.
- Neuromuscular diseases and peripheral neuropathies.
- Equine neurology cases.
As a guide, students will spend approximately 7 hours each week working through online material, including essential reading with up to 3 hours of online discussion and activity. A further 10 hours may be spent on additional self-study and assignments. It is very difficult to assess time spent in intellectual undertakings and the timings are only intended for guidance.

||This course will be assessed by the following methods.
- Case report or essay critically considering the management and evaluation of neurological problems in horses. 80%
- Open-book multiple choice questions 20%
Weekly discussion topics and activities.
||All assignments will be marked and feedback provided within a period of 15 working days following submission (excluding holidays periods whereby the University of closed, e.g. over the Christmas period).
Opportunities for informal feedback arise within the course discussion boards and live sessions as well as through email discussions. Formal feedback and feedforward will be provided only on coursework assignments and on formative activities.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate an ability to apply pathophysiological knowledge, epidemiological principles and evidence-based approaches (including selection of appropriate diagnostic procedures) to the evaluation and management of neurological problems in horses.
- Demonstrate an ability to apply therapeutic and surgical principles, to the management of neurological problems in horses.
- Discuss the practical application of new techniques and therapies for equine neurological problems.

A maximum of three essential reading items will be given each week with further reading as required. Additional resources will be provided, making full use of university electronic library, Learn, Media Hopper and other online resources.
