Summary | This course further defines and reinforces developing interior design skills relating to adaptation and reuse of existing buildings. |
Course description |
Students will be given an existing building to investigate in relation to its location in the immediate built environment and within the wider city context. They will be expected to research its historic background, as well as analyse, measure and draw it to scale.
They will be provided with a Brief requiring a change of use of the building which challenges the existing layout and fabric (for example transformation of an open plan space like a gallery into cellular accommodation such as a hotel).
Students will prepare outline proposals in sketch or other communicative form for discussion and reflection. During an iterative process they will prepare final project proposals including plans and sections of proposals, simple materials specification, more detailed information for a particular element of the proposals in drawing and/or model form to scale.

Other requirements | If this course is core to your programme you will be automatically enrolled, for all other students, including Design students, the course is open on a first come first served basis until the course is full. Where a course depends on some technical proficiency, PTs are encouraged to help students check with the appropriate Course Organiser regarding suitability, eg if student has previous external practical experience. The course will be open to enrolments from Thursday 13th September at 9.30am. Please sign up for the course through your own School (they will advise if this is done your PT, SSO or Teaching Office). We do not currently keep a waiting list. |

A portfolio containing Sketchbooks, plans and sections of existing and proposed building layout, basic material specification, detail drawings and 3D models., all presented in a coherent graphical manner.
All three Learning Outcomes are equally weighted in the assessment of components |

Formative feedback and Assessment:
Group presentations and crits will include verbal feedback from peers and staff on a weekly basis.
Summative Feedback and Assessment:
Each student will be given verbal and written feedback and will be expected to write an overview of their process throughout the project at final submission. |

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate a response to the project brief through the exploration of a wide range of relevant interior design perspectives theories and approaches.
- Show how research concepts have been explored in relation to final proposals using rigorous, creative and imaginative investigation.
- Present using a variety of appropriate techniques to realise design outcomes, which are communicated in a professional, reflective and clear manner.
