| Summary | This course aims to provide a brief but inclusive introduction to the key role played by Sicilian culture in a bottom-up history of the Italian literary canon, outlining the diversity of cultural traditions that marked its origins and its development, from minority to mainstream: from the Sicilian School of love poetry, which is credited with the invention of the sonnet, to the Sicilian novels that created the major narratives of the unification of Italy and the advent of cinema. |

Learning Outcomes
| By the end of this course, students should be able to demonstrate knowledge of the first Italian school of poetry in the vernacular, develop and apply techniques of analysis with critical understanding of basic literary forms such as the sonnet and the novella, and form awareness of the key role played by Sicilian culture in the development of Italian literary history.
